jason kottke hit another one out of the park.
via kottke.org:
Of all the things that Flickr has done, The Commons project might be the most significant. If, in two years, there are tens or even hundreds of thousands of old photographs previously unavailable to the general public from collections all over the world -- all tagged, geocoded, annotated, contextualized, and available to anyone with a web browser -- that would be an amazing resource for exploring our recent history.
Sketch This Sucka.

So after messing around in "Second Life" (which I can see as a total time sink) in the 1st afternoon session, I attended the session on Google Sketchup. Here's the "fruit of my labor". Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to grasp the idea of viewing the building's interior. What I was able to do though was create a cantilevered building that without me knowing that I was doing a curved version of the cantilevered new Boston Art Museum. Anyways, today was amazing, and I had some wonderful conversation to go along with my production.

online communities, day 2
"so here we are, face to face, a couple of silver spoons..."
other than getting that song stuck in your head, and images of erin grey and ricky schroder, things are going really well - everyone is posting up individual blogs, and we're discussing floating the idea of a communal blog that we can all post into. we're still talking about tech integration roadblocks, and some other issues while we set up our communal blog: UberTech08.
i keep forgetting that while i'm recharging my ipod and my phone, that my external mouse doesn't work. why do i keep reaching for it?
more updates as the day goes on...maybe even some pictures too.
well now we have an assignment:
blogging on the group blog about something, making sure to take it with one of the following tags:
work to do! now it's off to lunch. sandwiches!

bring out the gimp
well that was fun. and frustrating. the photoshopper in me kept trying to do things in gimp the way i do them in photoshop without a lot of success. as soon as i stopped trying to do that, i had a little more success turning this:

into this:

into this:
numbers, numre, nummers, numeros
had fun in the numbers session, and as a plus got a sneak-peek at the "wii-mote whiteboard" tool. now i just need to go buy as many boxes of cereal that have the "indiana jones light-up spoon" as i can.
online communities
i've just sat through the first part of our "online communities" strand. there was some great conversation, about all sorts of things tech-related, including blocks to tech integration, best practices, and what we want as teachers and "techies" as far as using technologies in our schools and classrooms.
tonight's assignment:
what are our tech "needs"? what are some of our "best practices"? how about our "roadblocks"?
